CKAN เป็น Open Source Data Portal Software ที่สามารถใช้ทำ Data Catalog ของหน่วยงาน ตัวอย่างเช่น สถิติอาชญากรรมในภูมิภาค หรือตัวเลขการใช้จ่ายของหน่วยงานรัฐบาล

ใช้ในการทำให้การเผยแพร่ การแบ่งปัน การค้นหา และการใช้งานข้อมูล โดยหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ สามารถนำมาใช้งานได้ฟรีไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่าย มีจุดมุ่งหมายให้ข้อมูลของพวกเขาเป็นข้อมูลเปิดและเข้าถึงได้

ทั้งนี้ทางมหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวรจึงนำระบบ CKAN มาเปิดเป็นระบบ OpenData สำหรับเผยแพร่ชุดข้อมูลต่าง ๆ ของหน่วยงานภายในมหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร ให้สามารถเข้าถึงได้โดยทั่วไป

In this regard, Naresuan University has adopted the CKAN system to establish an Open Data platform for publishing various datasets from departments within the university, making them publicly accessible.
